Special Olympics
Illinois has a long history of working
with the founders of The Special Needs Network and is pleased to
sponsor this initiative as it can help enhance the lives of Special
Olympic Athletes.
Special Olympics Illinois provides year round
sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports
for children (ages 8 years and older) and adults with mental retardation
or closely related developmental disabilities. These provide continuing
opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage,
experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and
friendship with their families, other athletes and the community.
More than 19,000 athletes participate in 19 individual and team
sports which have a dramatic impact on their lives. A study conducted
by researchers at Yale University confirms that athletes participating
in Special Olympics develop better social skills enabling them to
more fully function in their home, school, job and community. Special
Olympics athletes truly train for life!
